A visit to the stilt village - home of 20-30 000 people - is the most popular thing to do for people serving on board short term. Finally Bendik and I took the boat ride up the river from Cotonou to see this unique place at Lake Nokoué.
Ganvie (meaning: The collectivity of those who found peace at last) was built to protect people from slavery - the Fon warriors, that collected slaves for the Portuguese slave traders, were forbidden by their Dan-Homey religion to enter water.
